ARCH 655 Final Project - Daylight Simulation and Optimization in Urban Design

In this project, I am going to look at the daylight impact of the proposed high-rise building on the existing low rise courtyard locating on the north part to the tower. Then I will use Genetic Algorithm to optimize the shape of the tower so that it can minimize the impact on the solar gain of the existing block .

First, I created an existing courtyard block in grasshopper.

Second, I used the DIVA plug-ins for grasshopper to do the daylight simulation for the courtyard block. I chose the building material as outside facade. In order to make this project more typical, I selected the location in Minneapolis and the winter typical week as the simulation period. In order to calculate the gain of solar energy of the block, the simulation type is solar irradiation.

Then, I created a proposed high-rise building in the south block to the courtyard. The volume and the width of the tower are fixed. The length and the height are variable.

Next step is to do the daylight simulation for these two block in DIVA. I used the same settings as last step. We can see the impact on the front and top face of the courtyard block. The gain of solar energy is obvious decreased.

If I changed the length of the tower, we can see the change of the daylight impact on the front face of the courtyard block.

The last step is to optimize the shape of the tower to maximize the solar gain of the low rise block by Genetic Algorithm.

After 6 hours calculation, it got the optimal solution for the length of the tower.

In the optimal solution, the length of the tower is quite approach to the minimum value. It shows that in this project, the length of the tower has a much stronger impact on the daylight of the low rise block than its height.
